Bisphenol-A and Phthalates. Why you should care.

My wife reads BabyCenter forums quite a bit, and coincidentally to my posting about BornFree Glass Baby Bottles, there is a discussion about the “plastic scare”. Although I covered some of the facts in my article about Bisphenol-A and Phthalates, I have some common sense, give you my 2-cents thoughts on the subject.

Potty Watch. A flashing musical poop minder.

Potty time watch
Seriously, it’s a watch in the shape of a toilet so you don’t get confused of its purpose. The New Potty Watch by Potty Time, Inc. reminds a toddler to try to go to the bathroom. With the Potty Watch strapped to their wrist, toddlers will be reminded by music and blinking lights to head to the bathroom. At the same time, other toddlers will be alerted to commence beating the tar out of your beloved child who now has a bleeping/flashing nerd target on their wrist.

Parents choose the reminder interval of 30, 60 or 90 minutes between tries, extending it as children get better at figuring out when to go potty, allowing the parent to become even more detached and uninvolved in their child’s development.

Kids can also sing along with the well-known tunes. Potty time lyrics are included with the potty watch instructions. Which will add yet another incessant, overly repetitious song, their already sufficiently repetitive arsenal of tunes.

Of course, Ashley is not yet in the potty realm, so I probably will eat my words on this one and be begging for this thing when she enters that stage.

BornFree Glass Baby Bottles

BornFree glass bottle in package
A few weeks ago we purchsed 6 BornFree Glass Baby Bottles. BornFree actually makes 2 different kinds of bottles. A glass bottle, which is what we bought, and they make a plastic bottle, which is manufactured without Bisphenol-A, one of the chemicals in plastic that is being linked to so many bad things which i cover in here.

Being that plastic with food is turning out to be an all around bad idea, we decided to err on the side of caution and get the BornFree glass bottles. We could have gotten the EvenFlo glass bottles, but the nipple size is not wide-mouth, and there is no real venting system that would fit those bottles from what I could tell.

update: upper GI

Everything seems to be fine with Ashley, at least preliminarily. The Radiologist didn’t see anything, but we still are waiting for the full report. So it seems we just have a pukey, acidy baby.

Getting an upper GI done

Posted by mobile phone:
We are now at the hospital waiting to get an upper GI series done on ashley. We have been having such a problem with acid reflux, that the doctor finally said to get one. So now we get to wait, again… Seems kind of empty though, so maybe the wait won’t be as bad as the last time we were here. She will have drink some barium syrup while they xray her. Being that she won’t eat anything that she is supposed to, how likely is it that she will eat gross barium syrup. Hopefully nothing is wrong physically, and it’s “just an acid problem”, though that still is potentially huge issue. So, now we wait and get to she ashley’s throat in full action.

Boon Inc. Squirt

This is the ‘Squirt’ from Boon Inc. and it caught my eye. The orange bulb like thingy is where you put up to 3 ounces of baby food, which you can then squeeze out onto the spoon for easy feeding. It unscrews to be washed, apparently quite easy to clean. Being that I am only a couple months away from starting solid food with Ashley, I am kind of interested in this idea. At first thought, it seems to be a good idea, making feeding easier. No bowl for the kid to knock over and such. It also has a cap to keep the spoon clean for traveling.

Bisphenol-A and Phthalates in plastic. Duck and Cover.

UPDATE:
I have written an article about the BornFree Glass Bottles and have found some interesting things about parts from assorted companies and how they can all fit together.
———–
If you use plastic in your life, you probably haven’t thought much about it. The problem is that apparently you should. It has been suspected for a while, but only recently has begun to be properly investigated, that depending on the plastic type, Bisphenol-A or assorted Phthalates are leaching out of the plastic. It is beginning to turn out that this may be a big problem, and thats not the “sky falling”.

Ashley’s first Halloween

Ashley in a cat costume
Awww how cute.

Ashley’s first Halloween went well. She ate her food. She threw up. She peed her diaper. She got hot. She got cold. She cried. She slept. Actually the thing that was interesting was once she fell asleep, she didn’t get woken up by the dog barking every time the doorbell rang.
